Memorials to Civil War veterans and heroes abound throughout Pennsylvania. Gettysburg alone has more than 450 battlefield monuments, and many towns and communities have also erected their own monuments dedicated to those who served. GAR symbols still mark the graves in small country cemeteries, signifying the losses suffered by local communities. Across the Commonwealth, in town squares, rural cemeteries and veterans’ organizations, the legacy of the Civil War remains a part of community landscapes and local culture and heritage.
