By the time the first shots were fired at Fort Sumter in 1861, the United States Capitol building had been under construction for more than a decade. The new Senate and House wings remained unfinished and the great dome rose to less than half its final height. The Great Civil War that would test whether the nation would survive was a trial also for the building itself, and its long-suffering Philadelphia architect, Thomas Ustick Walter. Based on original drawings, photographs, prints and the architect’s own diaries and letters, this exhibition focuses on the architectural, engineering, political, artistic, military and family challenges Walter faced during the war years.

Road to Freedom Road Bike Tour
From 6/8/2012 – 6/10/2012 , NJ Tour

Venue:
Chambersburg, Kings Gap & Carlisle
NJ

Organizer:
Penn Trails LLC & Cumberland Valley Visitors Bureau

The Underground Railroad is known most for its secretive network that once helped runway slaves. It is true that hiding places, cubbyholes and code words needed to be used by abolitionists below the Mason-Dixon line, as slavery existed in the South. Yet, the Underground Railroad in Pennsylvania is better understood by learning the stories of intense struggles conducted by the people living in the Cumberland Valley. For understanding their history can change our knowledge of the Underground Railroad in profound ways. ?This tour consists of two days of riding, over approximately 40 miles, as we journey through the northern end of the Blue Ridge Mountains, connecting us to Franklin, Adams and Cumberland Counties. ?This bike tour program has been developed by historian Todd Mealy, a recognized Pennsylvania author of several books examining the Abolitionist Movement and Underground Railroad histories. You will cycle and see the most important locations where runaway slaves encountered help from the valley’s most profound abolitionists. We will travel to Caledonia State Park and two of Franklin County’s African American cemeteries. As we enter Chambersburg, the history becomes more compelling with stops at the house used by John Brown, where he planned his assault on Southern slave owners, the Old Prison located nearby, and a discussion about Martin Delany. As you ride along it won’t be difficult to image how the abolitionist communities of Shippensburg and Boiling Springs worked together to aid runaway slaves and protect the rights of free-Blacks living nearby. Your tour will include the Cumberland County Courthouse, arguably one of the best historic locations in the Cumberland Valley. At the Courthouse, and other stops along the way, we will meet and talk with Todd Mealy, one of Pennsylvania’s leading scholars on the topics of the Underground Railroad and Civil War Abolitionist History.
