This fully-supported and guided four-day Penn Trails Bike Tour is a completely unique blend of recreation and history which follows the route of Confederate General JEB Stuart’s southern cavalry on their hard-riding, controversial raid into central Pennsylvania during the 1863 Gettysburg Campaign. The tour includes detailed on-site descriptions and analysis of the battles at Hanover, Carlisle, Hunterstown, and Gettysburg’s East Cavalry Field by experienced professional historians, including our program guide Colonel Jim Boling (US Army Ret.), who also teaches at the U.S. Army’s War College in Carlisle, PA. Each day begins with an orientation to the overall campaign and a description and analysis of the actions and maneuver of Stuart’s cavalry and the opposing Federal forces during the period covered by that day’s ride. An informative Trail Guide for each rider provides enroute local color and anecdotes to accompany detailed route instructions. ?This tour is designed for active people eighteen years of age or older, who are intermediate to experienced riders, comfortable with daily distances of up to 35 miles. We will travel at a relaxed pace of ten miles-per-hour, over rolling rural terrain during the course of a seven to eight hour day. Each day will include pre-planned stops of approximately thirty minutes and a one hour lunch. Each rider is provided with a complete set of program sheets and ride books. We ask only that riders make the pre-planned stops with the rest of the group along the way, as there will be specific presentations and speakers. For those who may be less interested in Civil War battle history, optional guided excursions to examine local history and points of interest are available.
